Built-Up Roof is one of the oldest types of commercial roofing applied in modern construction. It’s name is derived from the way the roof is “built-up” by applying alternating layers of asphalt and reinforcing fabrics. These layers are referred to as “plies”. For instance, a “three-ply” roof would be constructed of three layers of fabric and four layers of asphalt. The reinforcing fabrics are also known as “felts” or “ply sheets”.
On some installations, a layer of gravel is applied on top of the built-up surface. This adds an additional component of fire resistance.
When properly installed, Built-Up roofs have excellent performance characteristics. However, as with all roof systems, deterioration occurs with age. It is notoriously difficult to find and repair leaks once they occur in BUR.
Built up roofing is less commonly used in commercial roofing today, due to a variety of more efficient and longer lasting products on the market. Repair, however, is necessary when roof replacement is not in the budget yet.
