Unique opportunities provide the chance for professional solutions. That was the case when Jewett Roofing Company was contacted by a successful Midwest manufacturer. The client’s business was housed in a historically significant brick building complex that dated back to the 1800s. It was originally used to house teams of horses that would haul ice from the local icehouse to customers in the days before refrigeration was prevalent. The goal of the reroofing project was to maintain the appearance of the buildings while addressing the waterproofing problems they were experiencing. Their business requires the use of overhead cranes that are mounted to the building structure to move heavy materials from location to location. Vibration from the cranes had been causing leaks to occur along the parapet walls that separate the adjoining building sections. In addition, the brick parapets were starting to show some deterioration after decades of exposure to the elements. After consulting with the Construction Manager, the decision was made to first address the brick problem by tuck pointing all the brick parapets. Jewett Roofing Company worked with the client to accomplish this prior to the roof installation. The roof itself was covered by a shingle system. After inspection it was determined that the material and deck were in a condition that would allow the installation of an overlay. There were also two smaller roof sections that housed concrete mixing equipment that had metal roofs. On these sections a Duro-Last metal retrofit system would be installed. To maintain the building’s appearance the client selected the 50 mil Duro-Last thermoplastic membrane in the dark gray color. This was a near perfect match to the current exterior building color. During the installation process several things were done to address the client's problems. First, all parapets were completely wrapped in Duro- Last membrane. This was done to protect the bricks from further deterioration. Then, the parapets that connected the building sections were wrapped in a manner to allow the building to vibrate during crane operations without affecting the membrane. Third, new gutters and downspouts were installed to provide a complete package that would give the client years of worry-free protection. Finally, walk pads were installed to provide protected walkways for maintenance personnel. They were also installed in certain areas to provide additional protection from any concrete residue from their mixing operation. The completed project resulted in a very aesthetically pleasing roof that addressed the client's needs and solved their problems. Not only was the client satisfied with the project, but future projects with them are on the horizon.Jewett Roofing Company is always ready to work with your company or organization to find professional solutions to your unique situation.
